COVID-19 UPDATE |
26 March 2020
We have made the difficult decision to pause all active Proof of Feasibility calls.
We understand that this will be a huge disappointment to those of you that have already spent time developing projects and drafting applications. However, we recognise that many of you will be facing unknown delays as a result of lab closures and project partners will potentially, at least in the short term, be prioritising their focus elsewhere in response to the crisis.
We need to have an understanding of what is required for us to complete existing projects – and what will be possible to deliver – before confirming the start of new projects.
However, our Technology Innovation Managers are still on hand to work with you to understand your technology development and innovation needs and identify the right partners within our regions to help you build a successful collaboration for the future – click here to view their profiles and obtain their contact details.
Industry-led Proof of Feasibility Funding
Our Industry-led Proof of Feasibility call is a new package of support available for small and medium-sized enterprises to develop innovative medical technologies by connecting with academic capability within the Grow MedTech consortium.
Proof of Feasibility awards of up to £20,000 for a maximum duration of 6 months are available to support industry-led medtech innovation projects, which fit with the scope of the award, and where proof of market and the clinical need have already been established.
The funding should be used to accelerate technologies towards commercialisation or clinical adoption, and assists in attracting follow on or external funding.
All projects must be based on:
- Collaboration (industry with academia)
- Co-investment (industry match*)
- Industry needs
- Global market opportunity
- Clear clinical drivers, patient benefits
- Expertise within a Grow MedTech University
- Developing a commercially viable product
*30% micro and small companies, 40% medium companies of the total project costs (in-kind and direct cash paid to the university partner)
Grow MedTech supports the development of medical devices, including materials and software, but does not support the development and discovery of pharmaceuticals.
This competition provides state aid funding under article 28.4 ‘innovation advisory and support services for SMEs’ of the General Block Exemption Regulation 651/2014 (“GBER”). It is the responsibility of the industry partner to make sure that they are eligible to receive state aid.
All applications should have a strong emphasis on patient benefit with plans for patient and public involvement and strong clinical engagement is encouraged.
This call does not directly fund industry/commercial organisations.
How to apply
Funding is via a single-stage process. Application forms can be provided by and should be co-developed with a Grow MedTech Technology Innovation Manager. Each bring unique sector and technical experience across medtech, research enterprise, manufacturing, knowledge exchange and more.
Find out which of the team has experience best suited to support your project and which university they are based at via their profiles, and get in touch for an application form.

Academic-led Proof of Feasibility Funding
To date, we have awarded funding to 21 Proof of Feasibility projects and there are currently no plans for additional calls to be announced in 2020.
However, if you are an academic or researcher at one of the Grow MedTech partner universities or could benefit from working with one, then our team may still be able to support the development of your medical technology by sourcing external funding. Contact a member of our Technology Innovation Management team to discuss your technology opportunity.
You can learn more about the types of projects that we’ve supported with Proof of Feasibility funding by downloading out 2019 annual report.
About the past call
Funding was available to support early stage feasibility and de-risking of technologies: investigating or demonstrating the feasibility of a technology concept, early stage prototype development and testing, and ensuring that a technology is designed to meet the demands of the end user from the outset.
The funding was used to accelerate technologies towards commercialisation or clinical adoption, and assist in attracting follow on or external funding. Funding was via a one stage process.
There was no requirement that projects have previously received Grow MedTech funding but prior Proof of Market funding was seen as evidence that the project was at the appropriate stage for Proof of Feasibility funding.
Proof of Feasibility awards costed up to £20,000 with a project duration of up to 6 months were available through this call, which fit with the award scope.
