Impact and Innovation Conference 2020
Join researchers from the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM) for the Institute’s second Impact and Innovation Conference event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on 28 February 2020 at 10am (registration from 9:30am).
A panel of expert speakers will showcase a range of impact and innovation themed presentations, including:
- Advice on demonstrating impact beyond REF2021
- Development of impact case studies
- Collaborations with industry through knowledge transfer partnerships
- Commercialising research through a spin-out company
- Securing innovation funding from the MRC
The impact competition will feature three activities: 1) poster competition; 2) image competition and 3) three minute ‘turbo-pitch’ competition.
Join LICAMM for lunch; take the opportunity to network with academics from research intensive universities and guests from industry; and spend a day focusing on impact, conceiving new ideas for collaboration, or just being inspired.
Speakers:
Prof Lisa Roberts – Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation, University of Leeds
Professor Roberts will speak about the University’s research and innovation strategy, and the support available at Leeds for delivering high-impact world-leading research.
Prof Brian Walker – Pro-Vice-Chancellor: Research Strategy and Resources, Newcastle University
Professor Walker is also Chair of the BHF Project Grants Committee, current member of the MRC Population & Systems Medicine Board and of the Clinical Medicine sub-panel for REF2021. He is a clinician scientist whose research on stress hormones reveals novel insights into pathology and pharmacology of steroid action. Professor Walker will speak about his experience of pursuing impact in his research on steroid hormones in cardiovascular disease.
Prof Nick Plant – Dean for Research Quality and Impact – University of Leeds
Professor Plant will offer insight on the importance of focusing on the impact of research in order to establish industry-academia partnerships.
Prof Aroon Hingorani – Chair of Genetic Epidemiology and Honorary Consultant at UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, University College London
Professor Hingorani’s research applies genomic data to help identify new drug targets for heart disease prevention and treatment. He will speak about his experience in establishing large-scale collaborative studies both nationally and internationally, and how genetic studies in populations can be exploited to identify and validate drug targets.
Prof Helen Philippou – Professor of Translational Medicine – University of Leeds
Professor Philippou will speak about her experience in securing funding for research, with a focus on the MRC Confidence in Concept award and British Heart Foundation grants.
Dr Richard Weller – Reader in Dermatology – University of Edinburgh
Doctor Weller will speak about the development of his spin-out company and his experience in commercialising research.
Giulia Bosseli – Knowledge Transfer Network, Innovate UK
Giulia Bosseli is the Precision Medicine Knowledge Transfer Manager at the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN). She will speak about the KTN activities to facilitate collaborations among businesses, academia, and research institutions.
